Identification
Bleakeleya notata (Grunow in Van Heurck) Round is one of several "necklace forming" diatoms present in Guam benthic assemblages. It is loosely associated with seaweeds and elsewhere has often been collected from the plankton. B. notata is a widespread species, and apparently unique in this group in having many small plastids. The valve face has a distinctive bracket-like -- } -- thickening separating the basal pore field from the rest of the cell, readily visible in acid cleaned valves. The basal pole is inflated and there is an additional inflated area. The basal pore field consists of several straight or slightly curved apical rows in the middle with several radiating rows towards the margin.
Literature: Körner 1970 (as Asterionella notata); Round et al. 1990.
