Identification
Individual cells of Ardissonea fulgens var. gigantea (Lobarzewsky) De Toni has the general shape of a Toxarium in valve view but a striae pattern similar to Ardissonea fulgens. Unlike the nominate variety, which is also common in Guam, var. gigantea forms distinctive flat fans in which the cells, adjacent by their valve faces, become more and more curved because of central area is wider than the apices, splitting apart when there are about 6-10 cells. The colony appears curved but is actually flat; the cells are curved in the plan of the colony.
